GrEen-Up your balcony!

If gardening is your favourite pastime but there is no backyard to do so, opt for gardening on apartment's balcony or on your desk instead. Aside from giving you fresh air every morning, it also gives a pleasant view. Here's how to get started:

1. Plants: due to space constraints, it is best to buy small plants that don't take too much space like bonsai, miniature roses, herbs, foliage, cactus and evergreens. You can also try spider plants as they are ideal for hanging baskets on the railing or on the wall.

2. Pots: ceramics planters are a great way to create a colour theme for your balcony and your desk and they come in various designs. To avoid water spills, place a saucer under the pots. Remember to regularly throw the water away so it won't become a breeding ground mozzies.

3. Decorating the plants: Always place the taller plants at the back and the smaller ones at the front, so that all of them are visible to your view. For greater impact, decorate the plants according to the same size and colour.

4. Water: Remember to water your plants regularly to make sure they are not wilting. This is because the moisture in your plants tend to dry quicker at high level.

5. Sunshine: It's important to arrange your plants properly to make sure that all will get the sunlight they need to grow. so make sure the smaller plants aren't blocked by the taller ones.
